8 Recommended Power Tools for Construction Projects

1.  10” Contractor Table Saw – Buy the nicest one you can afford.  You will use it more than any other tool for almost any cutting task you have.

2.  Power Drill(s) – Get a 18 volt cordless drill with a quick “chuck” which will let you change the bits quickly without a chuck key.  If you can afford it, buy a corded ½” drill for larger projects.

3.  Sliding Compound Miter Saw – You will use this for cutting dimensional framing lumber, crown molding and any other complicated compound cuts.

4.  Small Orbital Sander – These can be very handy and are not very expensive.  They are very nice for finish work and the pads are easy to change.

5.  Wormdrive Circular Saw – Buy a heavy one with a strong motor.

6.  Router – No shop is complete without a really good router.

7.  Reciprocating Saw – This is a must for demolition!  Get a decent one and you won’t regret it!

8.  Combo Compressor/Nailer Kit – Get one that comes with a finish nailer, brad nailer and a crown stapler.

Make sure you purchase decent brands so your tools last longer and are more reliable.  You get what you pay for in power tools.  Porter-Cable and Milwaukee Tools are well made brands will give you years more of use than the cheaper brands.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, buildings in the United States account for 39 percent of total energy use, 12 percent of total water consumption, 68 percent of total electricity consumption, and 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions! By building green, we can reduce the impact on the natural environment, economy and even human health.  Green construction methods can be integrated into buildings at any stage, from design and construction, to renovation and deconstruction.

Environmental benefits:

1.  Enhance and protect biodiversity and ecosystems

Add green building expertise to all your business offerings and give homeowners the assurance that their homes are healthier, and more energy and resource efficient.  As an added incentive, building green improves property values at the time of sale.  The following are examples of incorporating green in your building project:

1.  Energy efficiency:  Lighting, insulation, heating and cooling

2.  Resource conservation:  Using recycled materials and building durable

3.  Indoor air quality:  Using healthier materials and building for optimal ventilation

4.  Water conservation:  Using high efficiency toilets, dishwashers and washing machines and building drought resistant landscapes

5.  Community:  Working with neighborhood associations to assure low crime and walkable neighborhoods, bicycle friendly paths and parks

Construction companies should make their clients aware of the many benefits of building green.  You can provide added value to all your client transactions by guiding them toward healthier, economically sound decisions.

10 Guidelines to Building a New Home Stress-Free!

Planning is essential when building a new home, and the following 10 guidelines will help ensure the process is smooth and that the final outcome will be your dream home without breaking your budget.

1. Design – Your home should match your lifestyle and needs.  You should visualize every room to be sure you want to live in it!

2.  Wishlist – Make a list of your “must haves” and the items that are optional.  These will be important to work out when fitting the budget to your dream home.

3. Regulations – Be sure you and your builder know all requirements for zoning, allowable setbacks, sewage disposal, etc. and how these will affect your building project.

4. Budget – You need to be very clear about the overall cost of building your home and include additional “hidden” costs such as surveying, design, landscaping and permit fees.

5. Technical Aspects – Consider all constraints of the building site such as wind and sun exposure, septic field capacity and access.

6. Evaluation – Be sure to match your dream home with your budget and what you can afford.

7. Drawing Process – It is recommended that you leave this to the professionals.  Be sure to go over the blueprints with the building designer to make changes before they are finalized.

8. Design Development – Here is where the dimensions and other technical building details come into play.  Pay attention to details and discuss any questions regarding the technical aspects with the builder.

9. Working Drawings – This is the final stage of the planning phase and working drawings should include detailed specifications for materials and construction.

10.  Understand Your Contract – Read your contract and understand it.  Ask questions and understand the contract before signing on the dotted line.

You need to plan and be actively engaged with the builder/designer to make sure your new dream home is a stress free and exciting experience. Good luck!
